Homemade Cheddar Biscuit Recipe

Saturday morning Baby Girl asked for Cheddar Biscuits for breakfast. Up until now, I’ve always made them from a mix. However, since I’m learning to cook more from scratch I decided to give these a try.

I used my regular biscuit recipe and added cheddar cheese and garlic powder. They were so yummy! Who needs a mix when they’re this easy to make from scratch?

Cheddar Biscuits Ingredients:

  • 2 c. self-rising flour
  • 6 T. butter, cubed
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk*
  • 1 1/2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
  • garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • Add 1 tsp. coconut oil to cast iron skillet or baking pan and place in oven until melted.
  • Swirl pan to coat with melted oil.
  • In a large bowl, use a fork or pastry blender to cut butter into flour until it resembles coarse meal.
  • Add cheddar cheese and fully incorporate into mixture.
  • Add two or three shakes of garlic powder and combine into mixture.
  • Add buttermilk and stir just until mixture begins to pull away from side of bowl.
  • Scrape dough onto floured surface.
  • Sprinkle a little more flour on top of dough and knead a few times.
  • Pat out dough and fold it over.
  • Pat out again and fold over again.
  • Pat or roll out to approx. 1 inch thickness.
  • Cut with a biscuit cutter or small jar. Be sure to dip in flour before and in between each time you cut.
  • Place biscuits, sides touching, in skillet/pan.
  • Bake approx. 15 minutes until lightly browned.
  • Brush tops with melted butter and enjoy!

* If you don’t have buttermilk you can make your own. Place 1 T. white vinegar in measuring cup. Fill to 3/4 cup with milk. Let it stand for a few minutes and use it in your recipe.
