Grandmother’s Beef Stroganoff

This recipe was given to us by my husband’s grandmother when we got married. I am posting this recipe as it was given to me. I’ll also include the steps I take to make this a little healthier.

1 lb. lean round or sirloin steak, cut into bite size pieces
1 large onion, chopped
1 can beef consomme*
1/4 c. water
1 small can mushrooms, sliced
dash of Worcestershire sauce
8 oz. container sour cream*
garlic salt*
1 T. butter*

Sprinkle steak with garlic salt, salt, pepper. Roll in flour and brown in butter in skillet. Add onion, beef consomme, water, mushrooms, Worcestershire to steak. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Cool a bit and then add sour cream. Serve over rice or noodles.

* I substitute reduced sodium beef stock, light sour cream, garlic powder and canola oil. I also serve over brown rice with a salad on the side.
