I love the beach. It is my happy place. However, the majority of my beach time has been spent on the Gulf Coast. Until recently I’d never even seen the Atlantic. That is one of the reasons I was so excited to visit the Crown Reef Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary in July, so when I was given the opportunity to visit Myrtle Beach and stay at the Crown Reef Resort I knew it would make for a great 20 year getaway.
It was a long 12 hour drive from northwest Florida to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We arrived in the early evening tired and ready to relax. We received a warm welcome from the staff and made our way to our room. We were given one of the deluxe suites for our stay which featured crisp, white bedding on a comfy bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious and bright seating area to enjoy the ocean front view.
The Crown Reef Resort underwent a management change last year and since then the resort has undergone a major renovation to make this resort an outstanding value for families. All of the resorts 514 rooms have been upgraded; and we’re not just talking fresh paint either. There are new headboards, new mattresses, new bedding, new flat screen TVs, and more. The kitchens in the suites have also been upgraded with granite countertops, dark wood cabinets, and new appliances.
Our room lacked nothing and it was a fantastic place to rest and relax during our stay.
Since we were tired from the long drive there, the first night of our stay we grabbed some take out from the Loco Gecko restaurant located in the resort’s Town Center and ate it in our room. Afterward, we went out to explore the resort a bit and then took a long walk on the beach.
The next morning we were up and ready to explore some more. The resort’s Town Center is a great gathering place for the family. You’ll find the Loco Gecko Beach Shak restaurant, the Grab n’ Go Grill & Coffee Bar, the Swirl Ice Cream & Sweets Shop, and the Game On! arcade. You can grab a bite to eat and enjoy some down time here.
We ate three different meals from the Loco Gecko Beach Shak during our stay and enjoyed each one. They had yummy sandwiches, wraps, and pizzas but my favorite dish was the Broken Taco Salad. So tasty!
As for the restaurant, it did feature some signs and artwork that I wouldn’t consider the most family friendly. My kids would probably be embarrassed by some of them. However, you can always get your meal to go and eat outside or in your room if you think that would be an issue with your family. I think overall it would depend on the sensitivity level of your family to things like that.
Of course, when you’re at the beach you’re not going to spend all your time indoors. There are plenty of outdoor activities as well. While we certainly enjoyed some beach time, we couldn’t pass up some of the resort’s water features.
We had to try the new waterpark out. The TWISTER Body Slide is 38 feet tall and 302 feet long. The EXPLOSION Tube Slide is 38 feet tall and 278 feet long. They are both so fun and really fast! You could easily spend an afternoon just enjoying those two slides.
If you think these rides might be too much for young kids, they don’t have to feel left out. The resort also has a smaller KIDDIE slide that is 8 feet tall and 20 feet long. There is also a fun water play area for kids that feature a silly sub and treehouse.
If you need a break from the water slides, the resort offers a relaxing lazy river. At 575 feet, it’s the longest lazy river in Myrtle Beach. My husband and I made sure to enjoy the lazy river while we were there. The resort’s beautiful landscaping made you feel like you were floating through a tropical oasis.
The resort also offers indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, and kiddie pools. There is no shortage of opportunities for outdoor fun.
One of the best features of this resort is that they make it possible to enjoy the outdoor features year round with heated water and enclosures for the water park and kids play area. In fact, they were working on enclosing them while we were there.
The upgrades at Crown Reef are still in progress. They were working on the elevators during our stay. We did notice a few places around the pool area that needed a bit of attention and some areas of the resort are dated looking but overall, we thought the resort was nice and clean and on its way to becoming an excellent family getaway location.
I can’t say enough good things about the staff at the resort. They were so friendly. I absolutely adored the lady who was in charge of housekeeping for our room. I ran into her several times as I was coming and going and she was a joy.
I’ve talked a lot about how the Crown Reef resort is a great place for a family getaway but I must say it was also a great place for our 20 year anniversary getaway. While it’s not the most romantic place compared to other resorts that cater to couples, it is a lot of fun and that suited us just fine.
The Crown Reef Resort is located at the south end of Myrtle Beach, away from the more touristy area. It is far less congested than the north end of the beach but still a close drive if you want to check out the boardwalk area. That is definitely another reason I like this resort.
While not a 5 star resort, overall, I think the Crown Reef Resort is a great value and a fun place to getaway with the family or even as a couple.
